Arsenal made a strong effort to sign Nico Williams, but the Gunners were unable to convince the Spanish winger to leave Athletic Club. The attacker has continued to attract interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, yet he remains committed to staying with his boyhood side.
Arsenal reportedly pursued Williams during the summer transfer windows of 2024 and 2025, hoping to persuade him to continue his career in England. However, the winger has shown a strong attachment to his hometown club and has so far preferred to remain in Spain rather than accept a move abroad.
Williams has established himself as an important player for Athletic Club and Spain, attracting attention with his performances and attacking ability. His loyalty has made negotiations difficult for interested clubs, with Arsenal far from the only team to explore the possibility of signing him.
Williams turns down Arsenal and PSG
The winger has reportedly received approaches from several leading European sides, including Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain. Despite the interest, Williams and his family decided that remaining at Athletic Club was the right choice for his career.
He has also committed his future to the Basque club by signing a long-term contract, although speculation about a possible departure continues to surface. His latest comments suggest that, for now, he has no intention of changing clubs simply because other teams are interested.
Williams has explained that his decisions are made with the support of his family, highlighting the importance of their advice when considering offers from elsewhere.
Speaking via Get Football News Spain, he said:
“Apart from Barca, I had offers from PSG and Arsenal, and I rejected them. I am where I want to be. The decisions are made at home with my parents and my brother.”

Arsenal must look elsewhere
Williams’ comments provide a clear explanation for why Arsenal have struggled to secure his signature. While the club have been keen to strengthen their attacking options, convincing a player who is happy at his current team remains a significant challenge.
His decision also reflects the influence that family and personal connections can have on a footballer’s career. For Williams, staying at Athletic Club appears to offer the environment he wants, despite the prospect of joining a bigger European side.
