buccaneers Blowout: Did Tampa Bay Establish An Identity In Sunday's Massacre In Carolina?
After what felt like years of close contests, Sunday was finally a Buccaneers blowout victory. Was Sunday’s beatdown just a win or a discovery of a winning formula Tampa Bay can continue to use down the stretch of the season?
Buccaneers Blowout: Did Tampa Bay Establish an Identity in Sunday’s Massacre in Carolina?
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers walloped the Carolina Panthers 43-13 on Sunday afternoon.
The win was Tampa Bay’s largest since it beat the Panthers 48-14 at Raymond James Stadium on Dec. 29, 2024. On Sunday, the Bucs put on a similar performance, but this time it was at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
Coming into the game, the Bucs had played 12 consecutive games decided by one score. Tampa Bay was 3-9 during that stretch. The Bucs’ 30-point margin of victory was larger than their combined margin of defeat in their five losses this season, which was 27 points.
The Bucs have now won two of their last three games after their 0-4 start to the season. Tampa Bay now finds itself just a game and a half back of first place in the NFC South standings.
More importantly, the Bucs may have found a formula for success on Sunday afternoon.
The Bucs offense leans heavily on its rushing attack
The story of the Bucs’ win on Sunday was their bruising rushing attack.
Tampa Bay carried the ball 49 times for 258 yards, three touchdowns, and 5.3 yards per carry against the Panthers. The Bucs ran the ball on 81.7% of their plays, the highest rate by any team in a game this season.
Baker Mayfield attempted just 11 passes in his return to action. Mayfield’s 64 passing yards were the fewest in a Bucs win since 1999.
The Bucs ran the ball a lot, but they also ran it effectively. Tampa Bay’s running backs had 171 yards before contact on Sunday, the most in a single game this season.
“We want to lead from the front. We want it to be on our shoulders,” Bucs star left tackle Tristan Wirfs said after the game on the Bucs’ postgame radio show. “It doesn’t have to be so hard.”
Three Tampa Bay running backs had 50 or more yards on the ground.
The Bucs were led by Bucky Irving, who had 24 carries for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Both times Irving has rushed for 100 yards or more in a game this season, Tampa Bay has won.
Kenneth Gainwell also had his best game as a Buccaneer, with 14 carries for 88 yards. Gainwell hadn’t recorded more than 20 rushing yards in the Bucs’ first six games.
Sean Tucker added seven carries for 52 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown run.
Tampa Bay has now rushed for more than 140 yards in three of its past four games. The Bucs have averaged 4.5 yards per carry or better in five of their seven games this season.
The Bucs’ continued success on the ground is paramount given their struggles with turnovers and an overall lackluster passing attack this season.

Explosive Buccaneers defensive and special teams performance
As good as the Bucs’ rushing attack was, the Tampa Bay defense might have been better.
Tampa Bay held the Panthers to 13 points and 266 total yards. Carolina came into the game ranked fourth in the league in scoring, averaging 29 points per game, and second in total offense, averaging 404.4 yards per game.
The Bucs’ defense not only stopped the Panthers’ offense but also created scoring opportunities of its own. Tampa Bay’s defense had three takeaways, including a scoop-and-score by defensive lineman Calijah Kancey following a strip sack by outside linebacker Al-Quadin Muhammad.
Tampa Bay also recorded five sacks and eight tackles for loss in the contest. Three of those sacks came from Yaya Diaby, who set a new career high on Sunday afternoon.
The Bucs have racked up 10 sacks over their last two games against Pittsburgh and Carolina. They had six sacks combined in their first five games.
Tampa Bay cornerback Zyon McCollum recorded his first interception of the season in the second quarter. McCollum had two tackles, a pass breakup, and a two-point score following a blocked extra point in the game.
The Bucs’ pass defense was stifling against what had been the league’s top passing offense heading into the game. Bryce Young came into the game with 11 touchdowns and just two interceptions. His lowest passing yardage total in a game had been 281 yards against the Eagles in Week 6. Young had 163 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions on Sunday afternoon.
The other star of the night was the Bucs’ special teams unit. Bucs safety Tykee Smith blocked the extra point that McCollum returned for two points following Carolina’s first touchdown of the game. Smith also intercepted Young for his first interception of the season.
The Bucs also recovered a muffed Carolina punt in the first half. Pair those impact plays with another perfect day from kicker Chase McLaughlin, who has made all 16 of his field goal attempts this season, and you have a great day for new special teams coordinator Danny Smith and his unit.
“Complimentary football at its finest,” Mayfield said about the team’s performance after the game. “It was fun to watch.”

The Last Word
There is still a lot of work for Tampa Bay to do, even after the Buccaneers’ blowout victory on Sunday afternoon.
However, there is no denying that Todd Bowles’ team has played much better in October. And now the Bucs have put together a dominating performance against the division’s top team.
The Bucs have played one of the toughest schedules in the NFL, with their opponents through seven weeks posting a 19-6 record in games in which they did not play Tampa Bay. Heading into Sunday’s game against Carolina, the Bucs had the second-easiest remaining schedule in the league, according to winning percentage.
On top of that, the Bucs now have Mayfield back and healthy after he missed three games with a thumb injury.
An easy schedule, a replicable formula for success, and a healthy quarterback are all reasons to believe the Bucs could stack up wins in the coming weeks.
