Liverpool extended their winning run to four matches in all competitions on Sunday, beating Brighton 2-0 at Anfield in the Premier League.

It was Andoni Iraola’s first Premier League home win as Liverpool manager. Pascal Gross put the ball into his own net in the 17th minute, and Alexander Isak scored soon after.

The result lifted Liverpool to fourth, one point behind Brighton, and gave them eight wins in their last 10 games. Florian Wirtz came off in the second half after a knock to his ankle.

The women’s team also played on Sunday.

Liverpool drew 2-2 with London City Lionesses at St Helens Stadium after Jana Fernandez scored an own goal in the 92nd minute.

The point ended a run of two straight Women’s Super League defeats, at Manchester United and Aston Villa. Liverpool remain without a league win in three matches and sit tenth.

Another Liverpool player is also in the news, this time at youth international level. Midfielder Izzie-Mae Breen has been named in England’s Under-17 squad, according to the Football Association’s official website.

Head coach Kerri Welsh selected 24 players for the international against Belgium. England host the Red Flames on Thursday 29 October, with kick-off at 12:30.

The game is the squad’s final preparation before round one of the UEFA Women’s Under-17 EURO qualifiers.

England have been drawn in Group A7 with Belarus, Hungary and Denmark. The group will play from 28 November to 4 December, with Denmark as host. The qualifiers lead to the 2027 final tournament in Finland.

Breen is one of eight midfielders in the squad and the only Liverpool player named. Six players are listed as training players and cannot play in any fixtures. Breen is not one of them.

Chelsea have 11 players in the squad, the most of any club.

England’s most recent matches were a double-header in Finland. The Young Lionesses drew 2-2 on 10 September, then lost 2-1 three days later.
