Former Chelsea player Jason Cundy has slammed Blues manager Xabi Alonso after the loss to Tottenham. He believes the Spaniard made several mistakes, raising questions about him.
Speaking on talkSPORT's The Sports Bar, Cundy praised Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi while questioning Alonso's decisions. He stated that the Chelsea manager failed to make the changes needed during the game, which led to the loss.
"I came away from there yesterday, and I’m like, ‘I think there’s something there we should be concerned about.' Why didn’t he change it? Why are we going man for man? Tactically - I can’t believe I’m going to say this - De Zerbi got it right, and I can’t believe Xabi Alonso didn’t change it. I’m still in shock. At half-time, that’s where you earn your money. So I’m thinking, he’s going to change it. Personnel or a tweak to the system, something has to change. Nothing changed."
Meanwhile, Jamie O'Hara claimed that it was an arrogant approach from Chelsea and Alonso. He believes that they were overconfident about getting all three points and said:
"Do you know what it was? Arrogant Chelsea thought they could just rock up and be like, ‘it’s just Spurs. They don’t win here; they never get a result.’ It’s a new team, new philosophy, new gaffer, new players, new regime. That was it."
Mike Penders scored an own goal before Mathys Tel scored a second late goal to help Tottenham win their second Premier League match at Stamford Bridge.
Xabi Alonso comments on Chelsea's loss to Tottenham
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso spoke to the media after the Tottenham loss, saying that everyone had to take the blame for the defeat. He stated that the performance was not good enough, and said:
"We all take the blame for the result and for the performance. Today we were not at our best. I felt that in the second half, the game was even and could have gone either way. Once we conceded that first goal, and then with the red card, it was difficult."
"In the second half, it was tight, with some half-chances for them and half-chances for us. It was about taking a moment and once we conceded the first goal, it conceded everything. Then, when we wanted to have a reaction, we got the red card. Then it went the other way."
