Dez Bryant says confrontation began with reckless drivers
According to Bryant’s account, the incident began when he encountered two vehicles that he believed were driving recklessly and had cut him off. The vehicles eventually arrived at the same restaurant parking lot in Southlake, where the situation escalated into a confrontation between Bryant and one of the men.
Bryant said the man threatened or insinuated that he would shoot him during the argument. However, Bryant acknowledged that the man never actually pulled a firearm. Instead, the man took out his cellphone and began recording the confrontation.
Bryant admitted that he knocked the phone from the man’s hand. The man then called police, according to Bryant, who said he encouraged him to do so because he believed officers would investigate the entire incident.
When police arrived, the situation quickly became more serious. Video provided by Bryant shows him lying on the ground in handcuffs alongside the other men while an officer points a firearm in their direction. Bryant’s girlfriend arrived with his two daughters, who witnessed the confrontation.
Bryant was not arrested, but the citation reviewed by OutKick lists the charge as “Assault by Contact.” He was instructed to appear in Southlake Municipal Court by Nov. 20.
Bryant wants a full investigation into what happened
The former Cowboys star has strongly questioned how police handled the situation. Bryant believes officers relied too heavily on the cellphone video and did not adequately investigate what happened before police arrived, including his allegation that one of the men threatened him.
The most disturbing part for Bryant, however, was seeing his daughters witness him being placed on the ground with an officer’s weapon pointed toward him.
Bryant said he was particularly concerned about how the scene affected his children and argued that officers should have conducted a more thorough investigation before issuing the citation. He has characterized his actions as self-defense and is calling for fairness and a complete review of the circumstances.
No one was injured during the confrontation. OutKick reported that it contacted the City of Southlake for comment from the police department.
Bryant remains one of the most recognizable players in Cowboys history. He spent eight seasons in Dallas, earning three Pro Bowl selections and All-Pro honors in 2014 while finishing his Cowboys career with 531 receptions, 7,459 receiving yards and 73 touchdown catches.
The video and Bryant’s account have generated significant attention, but questions surrounding the confrontation remain. For now, Bryant faces an assault citation rather than an arrest, while he continues to call for authorities to examine the entire incident.
