David Moyes' side have found themselves on the wrong side of results over the past couple of weeks, with back-to-back losses.

Garner has been a mainstay in the Scotsman's team throughout the season, and it was no surprise to see him start against the Gunners.

However, the Englishman's day could have been cut short with the Toffees star at the end of a VAR check for a red card.

He ultimately remained on the pitch, with that incident now rewatched after the weekend's fixtures came to a conclusion.

Garner indirectly sparked a new debate about a football law.

Football law questioned after James Garner moment vs Arsenal

Garner went in quite aggresively in a tackle on Arsenal's Mikel Merino over the weekend.

And as stated, that incident did go to a VAR check.

The decision would land in Everton's way, and while former referee Dermot Gallagher agreed with it on Sky Sports, the moment has sparked another debate.

While Garner won the ball, the issue with the challenge was based on the follow-through.

This left pundit Jay Bothroyd in disbelief over why that should matter in tackles.

He stated: "This is another thing that I don't understand. Everyone talks about this follow-through stuff.

"Whereas if he's going to slide forward and tackle, there is going to be a follow-through because momentum takes you that way, right? So I don't understand how you can get sent off for follow-through."

Tim Sherwood, though, disagreed, stating he believed he would be able to stop himself.

However, he did later concede that due to the wet surface, he can see how it would be difficult on this occasion.

Garner's aggressive approach must never be taken away from him

Garner's aggresive tackling style is what makes him such a unique and promising player.

The midfielder is never afraid to get stuck in, with Sherwood believing that aspect of his game is key.

He said: "Garner and Armstrong can't take that away from their game. That's part of their makeup. Brilliant."

Those sorts of challenges, though, could eventually land the pair in trouble.

The Everton midfielder must be careful, with further bookings threatening to leave him suspended.

But as things stand, Garner and Armstrong have only picked up three yellow cards each.

Two more over the next 11 games would see them suspended for one game, though.
