'I could have': £84m Spanish star now confirms he snubbed Arsenal move

Spanish winger Nico Williams has clarified that he turned down interest from the likes of Barcelona and Arsenal due to his commitment towards Athletic Club.

The 24-year-old was a top target for elite European clubs in the summer of 2025. He was initially linked with Arsenal before Barcelona became a realistic destination.

The Blaugrana made a tentative approach to Athletic for their graduate, but Williams eventually surprised many by putting pen to paper on a lengthy 10-year contract.

In a recent interview, his agent Felix Tainta revealed the names of clubs that were interested in signing the Spaniard, which did not particularly go well with his brother Inaki.

Williams has now clarified those comments, highlighting that he was always clear about staying at Athletic and also conveyed the same to Barcelona, Arsenal and others.

He told AS: “The final decision is made by me, my brother, and the family. What happens at home, only the three of us know. I’ve never doubted being here.”

“I’ve had countless offers. I could have left, and I’ve always been clear about staying here. My intention to be here cannot be questioned.

“I told Barca, Arsenal, PSG, and many others no, because I want to be here. I hope people understand.”

Arsenal have moved on from Williams

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was previously known to be a firm admirer of Williams, but the Spaniard showed no intention of leaving Athletic in the summer of 2025.

Since then, the versatile attacker has had a mixed run of fortunes. He picked up multiple injuries last term and managed just 13 goal contributions from 32 appearances for his club.

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente still picked Williams for the World Cup. He was a regular substitute at the tournament and provided the assist for Ferran Torres’ dramatic winner in the final.

The new season has once again been frustrating for Williams, with just one goal in eight appearances, and one can say that the 24-year-old has been far from his best over the last 18 months.

Williams still has eight-and-a-half years left on his contract with Athletic. Arsenal seem to have moved on from him and look unlikely to explore a deal based on his present form and fitness.

As per reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano, Williams’ release clause will stand at £84 million from this year onwards. That price seems unjustifiable based on his inconsistent displays.

On top of this, Williams already earns a staggering £280,000 per week at Athletic. At his current fitness levels, no elite European club could attempt to change his stance next year.
