Chelsea Have ‘Dropped’ £70M Asking Price As Man City Weigh Up January Swoop

Man City are tempted to make another move for Chelsea fullback Malo Gusto when the January transfer window opens, according to reports.

Enzo Maresca’s side decided against signing the France international last summer after being put off by the player’s £70m asking price.

However, TEAMtalk claim that Gusto’s valuation has now “dropped”, and it could well open the door to the right-back moving to the Etihad.

Of course, a lot still hinges on the outcome of the Cityzens’ appeal after being found guilty of multiple breaches of the Premier League’s FFP rules, but there is a general feeling that a final verdict could take a very long time.

Why do Man City want Gusto?

There are several reasons why the 23-year-old is on the club’s radar. Firstly, with the exception of Rico Lewis, Maresca does not have a natural right-back in the first-team squad. It has been an issue since the departure of Kyle Walker.

Secondly, Maresca has worked with Gusto before during his time at Chelsea, and that link has already proven useful after Enzo Fernandez arrived on Deadline Day last month.

Are there any alternatives to Gusto?

It is fair to say that a key factor in Chelsea’s willingness to part ways with the Frenchman is his poor form. He has fallen behind Pedro Neto and Marco Palestra for starts on the right flank, even with captain Reece James out injured.

Gusto may, therefore, not be the best option on the market. City have been credited with an interest in other fullbacks as well. Brentford’s Michael Kayode and Barcelona’s Jules Kounde have been mentioned as potential targets in recent weeks.

Kounde was linked in the Spanish media, although it should be pointed out that prior to missing El Clasico due to an ankle injury, he had started the last two league games. Unlike Gusto, who may be prepared to leave Stamford Bridge, the Barca star may be tempted to remain at the Camp Nou. Kayode, on the other hand, would probably jump at the chance of joining City.
