Chelsea are reportedly weighing up a move for Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi as Xabi Alonso looks to fix a midfield that has struggled this season.
Why Chelsea Need a Midfielder
A surprise derby defeat to Tottenham was Chelsea’s third Premier League loss of the campaign. They remain fifth, but Alonso’s side have been outmuscled in the middle of the park in several winless games. Failing to replace Enzo Fernandez has left a clear gap.
Zubimendi Transfer Report
According to El Nacional, the Blues are interested in the Spain international. Alonso wanted him at Real Madrid before Arsenal won the race. Bruno Guimaraes’ arrival and Myles Lewis-Skelly’s versatility have reduced his minutes, which could tempt him to explore options in 2027.
Why Zubimendi Suits Chelsea
The 27-year-old, valued at £55m by Transfermarkt, thrives in a double pivot. He wins physical duels, controls tempo in tight areas and picks out incisive forward passes. Pairing him with Moises Caicedo makes obvious sense.
Will Arsenal Sell?
It is unclear whether Chelsea will act in January or wait until the summer. Mikel Arteta will likely want to keep him this season for squad depth. In my opinion, a summer approach looks more realistic, and Zubimendi would give Chelsea the control they are currently missing.
