The New York Giants secured a 27-21 victory over the Houston Texans on Sunday, but a controversial penalty involving running back Cam Skattebo left head coach John Harbaugh questioning the NFL’s officiating.
Skattebo was flagged for lowering his helmet while initiating contact with a Houston defender, a decision that sparked frustration over how officials interpret the league’s player safety rules.
Harbaugh defended his running back, insisting Skattebo was attempting to initiate contact with his shoulder rather than using his helmet as a weapon.
“I’m quite sure [Skattebo is] not trying to use his helmet as a weapon, as a battering ram. It’s not the way he’s thinking,” Harbaugh said.
“He’s leading with his shoulder. That’s what he’s trying to do. … So, I didn’t have a problem with the technique personally at all, but we haven’t heard from the league. Maybe they’ll be able to enlighten us a little bit on it in terms of what they want us to teach, and that would be great.”
The NFL prohibits players from lowering their heads to initiate forcible contact with their helmets. However, the rule continues to create controversy, particularly for running backs who routinely lower their bodies while fighting for additional yardage.
Skattebo runs hard
Skattebo’s physical running style has become a defining characteristic of his game, making the penalty particularly frustrating for New York.
Harbaugh’s comments also raise questions about whether the league provides sufficient clarity regarding acceptable tackling and running techniques.
While protecting players from dangerous helmet contact remains essential, officials must distinguish between intentional helmet contact and natural football movements.
Despite the controversy, New York overcame the penalty to secure an important road victory.
However, the incident could lead to additional conversations between the Giants and league officials.
For Harbaugh, the message is clear: Skattebo should not be penalized for playing physical football when his technique is fundamentally sound.
