The wait is over, football and music lovers! The halftime show performer for Super Bowl LXI is finally here.

On Monday, Oct. 23, Jay-Z — who is the NFL’s “live music entertainment strategist” — was announced as the performer for the highly anticipated halftime show.

Roc Nation and Apple Music announced the news during ESPN’s Monday Night Football broadcast, featuring the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys. An announcement was also published on Roc Nation’s Instagram page. “GOAT’s out of the bag,” the caption read, alongside a clip of Jay-Z sitting in a football stadium.

“From Reasonable Doubt to standing on the Super Bowl halftime stage, this has been a journey,” Jay-Z said in a statement. “Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world’s biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true.”

In 2019, Jay-Z and Roc Nation entered a partnership with the NFL that tasked him with selecting the halftime performer and assisting with social-justice reform initiatives. In 2025, halftime producer Jesse Collins spoke toVariety and explained his role.

“It’s a decision that Jay makes,” he said. “Since we’ve been onboard with that show, he’s made it every year, and it’s been amazing. He’s always picked right.”

Weeks before the Super Bowl announcement, the “Empire State of Mind” rapper released an eight-part HBO docuseries, JAŸ-Z in 8, which explores his catalog.

He also performed a stream of anniversary shows to celebrate 30 years of his debut, Reasonable Doubt, and the 25th anniversary of Blueprint. Speaking with PEOPLE at the premiere of his docuseries in New York City, Jay-Z said the latter was a “staple.”

“It was one of those moments where, Reasonable Doubt, I didn’t know the music business. So I didn’t have aspirations of any goals. I was just making music to make music. And then, [*In My Lifetime,*] Vol. 1, I was trying. Then Vol. 2, I figured out songwriting.”

“The Blueprint was like that moment where I was like, ‘Aw, I’m here. I’ve arrived and I’m here to stay,’” Jay-Z added.

Last year, the halftime show was headlined by Puerto Rican star Bad Bunny. In July, the show earned a record-breaking nine Emmy nominations — making it the most Emmy-nominated Super Bowl halftime show ever. Bad Bunny’s performance drew a staggering 128.2 million viewers, making it the fourth-most-watched Super Bowl halftime show in history.

Before Bad Bunny, recent halftime show performers included Kendrick Lamar (2025), Usher (2024) and Rihanna (2023).
