When it comes to the Philadelphia Eagles on the injury front, when it rains, it pours.
Heading into a Monday Night Football clash that already didn't feature DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks, or Nolan Smith, Sean Mannion had to watch Saquon Barkley cycle in and out of the game all night as he worked through a hamstring injury that cost him much of the month.
Fortunately for the Birds, when Barkley was on the sideline, they could at least count on Dameon Pierce to hold things down as a solid veteran back, but by the fourth quarter even his number was no longer one Mannion could call, with the former Houston Texans star helped to the locker room after taking a particularly rough hit after recording 14 carries for 47 yards and a touchdown.
Initially joining the Birds on a one-year contract back in March, Pierce didn't make the Eagles' initial 53-man roster coming out of camp, instead sticking on the practice squad alongside preseason standout Carson Steele. Still, as injuries mounted, including to Barkley, Tank Bigsby, Will Shipley, and Steele, Pierce earned a chance to play in Week 5 and made the most of it, leading Philly in rushing attempts in each of his first three appearances of the season.
While the Eagles ultimately didn't need Pierce to return in their loss to the Cowboys, with Elijah Mitchell holding it down at running back and kick returner – even if that didn't go particularly well – it will be interesting to see if he can return in Week 8 or if his injury will persist into future weeks.
