Jay-Z picks himself for 2027 Super Bowl Halftime show performer as everyone asks the same question

Jay-Z has officially been announced as the headliner for the 2027 Super Bowl Halftime Show, but fans have one pretty big question - did he just pick himself for the job?

In short, yes. Yes, he did. The 56-year-old rapper will take the stage at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, next February, after the NFL, Apple Music, and Roc Nation confirmed the news on Monday (26 Oct).

"From Reasonable Doubt to standing on the Super Bowl halftime stage, this has been a journey," Jay-Z said in a statement released yesterday. "Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world’s biggest stage.

"This run continues to be a dream come true.”

And while having one of hip-hop's biggest names perform at one of the world's biggest sporting events sounds like a pretty solid plan, there's just one tiny detail fans seemingly can't get their heads around.

For those in need of a reminder, Jay-Z has been instrumental in choosing the Super Bowl's halftime performers since his entertainment company, Roc Nation, partnered with the NFL in 2019.

Acts selected during the musical-sporting collaboration have included Rihanna, Usher, Kendrick Lamar and Bad Bunny - the latter of whom earned nine Emmy nominations for his knockout performance.

Halftime producer Jesse Collins told Variety last year that part of Jay-Z's role as the NFL's 'live music entertainment strategist' is decision-making, and always has been.

"Since we’ve been on board with that show, he’s made it every year, and it’s been amazing," Collins explained. "He’s always picked right."

So, with the man responsible for helping select the acts now officially announced as the next headliner, people are understandably wondering how that decision was made.

And naturally, social media has been having a field day.

"Announced himself, you mean!" one person joked in response to the announcement, while another asked: "Doesn’t Jay-Z pick the artist?? So he just picked himself?"

Someone else wrote: "Let me get this straight… Somehow Jay Z is in charge of picking the halftime show performer... and he picked himself... I’m cringing."

Another person imagined the rapper’s thought process, writing: "It’s hilarious that Jay-Z has been in charge of Super Bowl halftime shows for the last few years, heard all the criticism, and was like, 'I’ve thought long and hard about the solution that will appease America, the one artist they’ll all agree is a great fit…me'."

And the jokes kept coming.

"Bro gave him himself a job that nobody asked him to do," one user commented, while another quipped: "Jay-Z has declined to rule out Jay-Z as a surprise guest."

Perhaps the most succinct reaction came from someone who wrote: "Jay finally approved his own application."

It's worth noting that not everyone is questioning whether the rapper can deliver a memorable performance.

One fan acknowledged the controversy while writing: "I’m sure Jay-Z will put on a great halftime show, but the optics of him picking himself is dreadful."

The announcement also follows reports that Jay-Z had emerged as the preferred choice over other potential contenders, including Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, according to The Independent.
