Liverpool host Chelsea in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday.
Andoni Iraola’s side beat Brighton 2-0 in the Premier League on Sunday, their fourth successive win in all competitions. They reached this stage by beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 in the third round.
Liverpool have injury concerns. Florian Wirtz is a doubt after twisting his ankle against Brighton. Dominik Szoboszlai, Jeremie Frimpong, Conor Bradley and Hugo Ekitike are already out.
Chelsea also have problems. Head coach Xabi Alonso returns to his former club without the suspended Cole Palmer, who was sent off in Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat by Tottenham. Forward Joao Pedro is unlikely to play after a knee injury.
Work is also under way behind the scenes.
Liverpool appointed Julian Ward as sporting director on Saturday 26 September, replacing Richard Hughes, who left for Al-Hilal.
The club wants to sign the best young talents from around the world and a new scouting name now features in those recruitment plans.
According to ESPN Brasil, Flamengo head of scouting Andrii Fedchenkov has an agreement to work for Liverpool from January.
The 30-year-old Ukrainian specialises in the South American, European and Japanese markets.
He will stay at Flamengo until his contract ends in December.
Flamengo announced Fedchenkov as their scouting manager on 6 February 2025. He arrived on the recommendation of football director Jose Boto, with whom he had worked at two European clubs.
Those clubs were Shakhtar Donetsk and PAOK, and Fedchenkov joined Flamengo from Cardiff City. He is fluent in Portuguese, English, Spanish, Russian and Ukrainian.
Terra reported that Fedchenkov will strengthen Liverpool’s analysis work, while Flamengo plan an internal succession to keep his methodology in place. The reports do not specify his exact role at Anfield.
Liverpool play Chelsea on Wednesday, then host Arsenal on Sunday 1 November. Fedchenkov is due to begin work at the club in January.
