Jamie Carragher has insisted he would take Trent Alexander-Arnold back at Liverpool as speculation over his future intensifies.

Alexander-Arnold looks to have well and truly fallen out of favor at Real Madrid. Having already fallen behind Denzel Dumfries in the pecking order at right-back under Jose Mourinho, Fede Valverde now also looks to have moved ahead of him, with the midfielder having taken up the position in recent games.

The former Liverpool vice-captain did make his first appearance in four games against Barcelona on Sunday, having been left on the bench against Roma, Sevilla and RB Leipzig recently - even then though, he only came on as a substitute in the fourth minute of added time as Real looked to see out its 2-1 win in El Clasico.

Alexander-Arnold’s lack of game time has led to speculation that he could be on the move soon, and a return to Anfield has been touted in some corners.

A number of pundits have already talked up the prospect of the 28-year-old moving back to his boyhood club, although some feel the manner in which he left Merseyside may make things difficult.

Carragher though is in no doubt, and feels Alexander-Arnold’s return would be a big boost for Liverpool.

“I’d have him back anyway,” the former Reds defender said on The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet.

“Give him plenty of stick... I think he made a mistake, I do. I think he made a big mistake.

“But, as I said, if something benefits Liverpool Football Club going forward… and we do have, when you think of the problems Liverpool have in terms of the right-back. Ronnie (Ronald Araujo) has been fantastic, and I agree with you, but we do have a problem in terms of fullbacks passing. We’ve definitely missed his creativity.”

Before a return to Anfield could be considered, Alexander-Arnold faces a fight to claw his way back into the reckoning under Mourinho at the Bernabeu.

The England international has made just seven appearances for his current club so far this season, with just four of those coming from the start. Rather more worrying for him, he has been left on the bench six times, with little sign that he could displace either Valverde or Dumfries.

“At the moment, he’s actually third choice right-back for Real Madrid,” Carragher pointed out.

“They’re playing a midfield player at right-back, so even last night in El Clasico, Denzel Dumfries, the first-choice right-back, if you like, comes on as a sub. So when you’re third choice at a club, they’re obviously wanting you to... move on.”
