In an act of supreme nobility and humility, rap mogul Jay-Z has been selected to perform at the 2027 Super Bowl LXI Half-Time show, marking his first time headlining the world’s biggest stage.
If it were anyone else, this would just be another run-of-the-mill half-time performer announcement, except the person who chooses the half-time performer is none other than Shawn Carter, otherwise known as Jay-Z.
The announcement comes after weeks of heavy rumours suggesting the New York rap legend would take the stage, with Roc Nation (Jay’s label) taking to social media to share the news alongside NFL and Apple Music.
Has Jay-Z Ever Played The Super Bowl Half-Time Show Before?
Somewhat surprisingly, Jay-Z has never taken to the stage for the Super Bowl Half-Time show. But, according to his own lyrics in 2018’s “Apeshit”, he allegedly declined an offer to perform. That being said, he’s been heavily involved in the show’s production for years now.
In 2019, Roc Nation signed a deal with the NFL that would make the label, along with Apple Music, the lead producer of the show. That deal, which was extended in 2024, has coincided with a celebration of some of Jay-Z’s peers as half-time headliners, like Usher, Kendrick Lamar and 2022’s celebration of 50 years of hip-hop with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and more. In fact, in 2024, Roc Nation’s own Rihanna even came out of music retirement to take the stage.
The announcement comes during a special moment in Jay’s career too, with 2026 marking 30 years since his game-changing debut album Reasonable Doubt.
From ‘Reasonable Doubt’ to standing on the Super Bowl halftime stage, this has been a journey,” Jay-Z said in a statement via ESPN.
“Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world’s biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true.”
In fact, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell apparently always had plans for Jay-Z to take the stage when the Roc Nation deal was signed. Via ESPN, Goodell requested, that when the agreement was reached, HOV would take the stage “whenever the moment felt right to him.”
Who Might Join Jay-Z On Stage At The 2027 Super Bowl Half Time Show?
Obviously, we won’t have a clue of Jay-Z’s special guests (if any) until the performance is actually happening, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out who his first pick might be.
Beyoncé is no stranger to the Super Bowl half-time stage, having headlined herself in 2013 and returning for a special appearance during Coldplay’s headlining performance three years later. It will hardly be surprising if, during this momentous time in her husband’s career, she joined him onstage to perform one of their many duets, cementing themselves as music’s royal couple.
Speaking of music divas, Rihanna might also get a call from Jay-Z to join him. As one of the biggest stars on Roc Nation, it would make sense that she make her Super Bowl half-time sophomore appearance to perform blockbuster collaborations like “Umbrella” and “Run This Town.”
Of course, the wishful thinkers among us might expect Kanye West, arguably Jay-Z’s most iconic collaborator, to appear onstage. But given the pair’s soured relationship and Kanye’s… behaviour, that one might be stretch.
Speaking of beefs, it might be smart thinking of Jay to bring out Nas, putting the final nail in their infamous feud. The two have long since reconciled, but seeing them go toe-to-toe together on a stage as iconic as the Super Bowl would me a real moment.
When And Where Is The 2027 Super Bowl?
Super Bowl LXI is set to take place at Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium, marking Los Angeles’ ninth time hosting the game and SoFi Stadium’s second after 2022. While we don’t know what teams are playing the Super Bowl yet, we can expect them to battle it out, as well as Jay-Z to perform, on Sunday, 14 February.
