Xabi Alonso has provided an injury update ahead of Chelsea's clash against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup fourth round. The Blues will be without a few big names when they face Andoni Iraola's side at Anfield on Wednesday night as they look to return to winning ways.
Speaking to reporters at Cobham training ground on Tuesday afternoon, Alonso began by confirming that Joao Pedro has suffered a thigh injury. The striker was left out of the matchday squad on Saturday evening, when Chelsea lost 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur.
"He has an injury of his thigh and is going to be out for a few weeks. Let's see how many. He's not ready for the next games," said the Blues manager. "Of course, he's a key player. We'll miss him. We have to be ready to deal with the injury, starting tomorrow with Liverpool."
Chelsea have lost three of the opening eight Premier League games this season; two of the defeats came when Pedro was unavailable due to a knee problem. When asked whether his side will manage without the Brazil international, Alonso said: "Yeah, for sure.
