Jamie Carragher has warned Everton fans they should be careful with what they wish for over David Moyes.

The Everton manager's long-term future is up in the air, with his contract coming to an end after this season.

Discussions over a new deal are likely to remain a hot topic among fans, and there will be many who believe a change in the dugout can push the Toffees upwards.

With Everton now looking to establish themselves further up the Premier League table, it has been argued that replacing Moyes could prove a far bigger gamble than some supporters realise.

Moyes has done an excellent job to stabilise the Blues following multiple tumultuous years of battling at the bottom of the table.

And Carragher has issued a stark warning to those who may think Moyes' time is running out.

Jamie Carragher issues relegation warning to Everton

Moyes has routinely been questioned as Everton manager and whether or not he can take the Toffees to the heights they want to go.

However, Carragher has warned Everton fans that the grass may not be greener on the other side.

The football pundit suggested they could risk returning to the relegation battle by replacing him.

Speaking on The Overlap's Fan Debate, he said: "I know the supporters will probably be a bit angry about that and maybe will not want David Moyes to stay or sign a new contract.

"And I just think it'll be really interesting to see what happens to Everton over the next couple of years if they get a new manager.

"Because I think every supporter wanted to go that way; it could easily go the other way where it was before Moyes came back, where it felt like every season was fighting relegation."

Carragher went on to say that while he doesn't believe Everton's squad is relegation fodder, a new manager may not be able to extract what Moyes has so far.

Everton's squad, while weak in depth, is certainly much better than being at the bottom of the table.

The likes of Jack Grealish, Jarrad Branthwaite and James Garner are all capable of fighting near the top of the table.

However, a couple of injuries here or there, and with a different manager, Carragher's point does have basis to stand on.

What is the latest on Moyes' future?

Moyes' future is unlikely to be resolved anytime soon.

Amid the Friedkin Group putting Everton up for sale, reports emerged that contract talks with Moyes have been stalled.

The issue involving the manager is instead being left up to the prospective new owners at Hill Dickinson.

It is not quite ideal for the Toffees, as uncertainty around the manager could end up creating more problems.

Moyes, though, will need to buckle down and get his squad performing to the highest level possible, meaning the next owners have no other decision but to keep him on.
