Liverpool have told Valencia they want to sign David Otorbi, as per latest transfer news. Valencia quickly responded by extending the teenager’s contract and doubling his release clause to €60m.

Valencia block Liverpool with a new contract

Liverpool contacted Valencia to say they planned to pay the €30m (£25m) release clause in his contract. The approach came this week, as reported by TEAMtalk, and Valencia acted to protect one of their best prospects. Valencia extended his contract by three years and doubled his release clause to €60m (£50m). His previous deal, signed in April, ran until June 2028, so the new terms take it to 2031.

Otorbi came through the Valencia academy and made his senior debut in January 2024, aged just 16. That made him the youngest debutant in Valencia history, and two seasons with the reserve side followed. Under coach Javier Aguirre, he scored his first senior goal against Racing Santander on 11 October. He came on in the 58th minute, scored seven minutes later, and completed two dribbles and created two chances.

What David Otorbi could bring to Anfield

Otorbi plays on the right, but he is a different type of winger from Mohamed Salah. Salah is left-footed and cuts inside to shoot, while Otorbi is right-footed and more likely to attack the byline. That difference would change how Liverpool attack, because his width would let the full-back sit deeper. His direct running would also give the team a quick outlet when they win the ball back. Against compact defences, crosses from wide areas would offer a different route to goal than cut-ins. At 19, he looks more like a long-term project than a ready-made replacement for Salah.

His agent, Nacho Gallart, said earlier this month that English clubs have been in touch about the winger. He added that Otorbi has “a big market”, with many of the calls coming from the Premier League. Gallart also stressed that the player is happy at Valencia and wants more minutes under Aguirre. Newcastle United have shown the strongest interest of all and are tracking his progress throughout this season. Newcastle have been here before, because Liverpool beat them to winger Victor Munoz in June after triggering his release clause.

Liverpool still need a winger plan

Liverpool still need a successor on the right wing as they plan for life after Mohamed Salah. David Otorbi is one name on the list, but his senior record is short, so any fee is a gamble. Bournemouth winger Rayan, whom Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola coached at the Cherries, is a bigger name but will not come cheap. His £130m release clause becomes active in 2027, more than double the £50m now attached to Otorbi. That £80m gap explains why a young winger with room to grow could offer Liverpool better value.

Yankuba Minteh and Ismaila Sarr could return to Liverpool’s list in January, having held talks with both over the summer. A January move looks difficult for any suitor, so a summer deal in 2027 appears the more realistic window. Liverpool would then face the full £50m clause, while Newcastle will want another chance at him. How many minutes he earns in the coming weeks will show whether he is ready for top-flight football in England.
