Everton FC and Newcastle United are set for a double dip. The first clash comes on Thursday night, when the two sides meet for an EFL Cup fourth round tie at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Then the scene shifts to St. James’ Park, on the weekend, for a league fixture. The Toffees currently have a short injury list, but it consists of some really key players however. Central defender supreme Jarrad Branthwaite and expensive winger Jack Grealish are currently doubtful while Ukrainian left-back Vitalii Mykolenko suffered a fresh injury in the weekend loss to Arsenal.

Mykolenko was forced off early, with an unspecified, undisclosed injury issue. After the match, manager David Moyes responded to a reporter query on the topic with only: “Don’t know yet. No idea.” So we’ll await more word on that. As for Grealish, he’s been dealing with a virus, so we’ll see if he can shrug that off in time.

As for Branthwaite, he has a concussion, and it is notoriously difficult to predict when a player will recover from that specific injury.

After all, a concussion is a functional disruption of brain cells. When these kinds of injuries occur, there is a rapid shaking that stretches and damages microscopic nerve axons, and that causes a causing a neurological energy crisis.

It’s hard to formulate a recovery timeline in situations like these, so we don’t know when Branthwaite will be back.
