The Atlanta Falcons' defense had plenty of questions to answer after last week's ugly performance against the Chicago Bears. On Sunday, they responded big time by handing the previously undefeated San Francisco 49ers their first loss of the season.
Atlanta forced four turnovers in its 29-20 victory over San Francisco including two interceptions of Brock Purdy and two fumble recoveries, as it was clear defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich had this unit prepared for battle entering a tough matchup.
It was a massive turnaround for a defense that had just allowed Caleb Williams to complete 30 of 36 passes for 305 yards in a 31-23 loss to Chicago. And perhaps the most encouraging part? The Falcons pulled it off despite missing several important defensive contributors.
The Falcons' defense was the reason they handed the Niners their first loss
The Atlanta Falcons defense had its hands full against a San Francisco offense that entered Sunday's matchup having committed just six turnovers through its first six games.
The Falcons nearly matched that total in one afternoon. Veteran safety Jessie Bates III came through with one of the biggest plays of the game, showcasing a little toe-drag swag to intercept Purdy at Atlanta's 10 yard line to prevent a potential scoring opportunity.
But the biggest surprise came from rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels, who was stretchered off the field with a frightening injury against Chicago just one week earlier.
Daniels returned in Week 7 and delivered arguably his most impressive performance of the season, recording 11 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. His interception helped pad the lead, while his recovery of a George Kittle fumble forced by Bates gave Atlanta another takeaway to seal it.
And to make his performance even more impressive, Daniels took over defensive communication responsibilities with Divine Deablo sidelined.
The Falcons were also without Billy Bowman Jr. and Avieon Terrell, making their defensive performance even more encouraging considering the circumstances. Atlanta certainly wasn't perfect. San Francisco still managed 400 total yards, and Christian McCaffrey missed significant time with a thigh injury.
Still, the Falcons made the plays they needed to make when it mattered most. That's something they struggled to do against Chicago just seven days earlier.
The Falcons defense shows signs of life after rough start
The Atlanta Falcons finished with two sacks, six tackles for loss and seven passes defended. They also extended their streak of forcing at least one turnover to five consecutive games. Of course, one impressive performance doesn't erase everything that went wrong against Chicago.
San Francisco was dealing with several offensive injuries, and Atlanta still allowed 400 yards and 26 first downs. There's plenty for Ulbrich to clean up before the Falcons can confidently call their defense a strength.
But considering how poorly things looked just a week ago, Sunday's performance was exactly the kind of response Atlanta needed.
The Falcons now sit at 3-4 heading into a Week 8 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where they'll have an opportunity to build on their biggest win of the season and possibly take control of the NFC South.
And if Jeff Ulbrich (who has done a sensational job with this group as it is) can continue having this defense consistently creating turnovers and making plays in critical situations, Atlanta might finally have a chance to establish some consistency.
