Cam Skattebo delivered his best performance of the season as the New York Giants defeated the Houston Texans 27-21 in overtime in NFL Week 7. The running back finished with 124 rushing yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, averaging 7.3 yards per attempt. He also broke a 42-yard run in overtime, helping set up the Giants’ game-winning score.

The performance came at an important time for Skattebo, who had been left without a single touch in the Giants’ Week 6 loss to the New Orleans Saints. After his costly fumble against Washington in Week 5, his role had diminished, while the backfield rotation created uncertainty over who would lead the ground game.

The Giants released Najee Harris but another setback has changed the situation again. Tyrone Tracy Jr. suffered a hamstring injury against Houston, leaving New York with fewer options as it prepares for the next stage of its season.

The Giants announced that Tracy will be placed on injured reserve because of his hamstring injury, which he suffered during the second quarter of the victory over Houston. General manager Joe Schoen confirmed the move during his bye-week press conference.

Tracy had six carries for 15 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game. His absence removes another option from a backfield that has already experienced significant changes, following Harris’ departure and Skattebo’s reduced role against the Saints.

With Tracy sidelined, the Giants could rely more heavily on Skattebo when they return from their bye week. Devin Singletary remains another option, having scored the game-winning touchdown against Houston.

Cam Skattebo’s health is also a concern

Tracy is not the only Giants running back whose health deserves attention. Skattebo appeared to experience a hamstring issue late in overtime after breaking his 42-yard run.

After the game, Skattebo explained why he slid on the play that set up Devin Singletary’s game-winning touchdown. The running back said he felt something in his hamstring and knew the Giants were already in field-goal range prompting him to slide (h/t ESPN’s Dan Graziano).

“Good thing we have a bye week,” Skattebo said. The break gives him additional time to recover before the Giants return to action.

The Giants will visit the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 9 after their bye. New York enters the break with a 4-2-1 record and first place in the NFC East.
