Chelsea Join Race for Alex Scott
Chelsea are reportedly preparing a January approach for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, according to TEAMtalk. The 23-year-old is also admired by Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
Why Chelsea Want Reinforcements
Xabi Alonso’s first season in charge has been uneven. Chelsea sit fifth in the Premier League with 13 points from eight matches, having lost three and shipped 15 goals. The report suggests midfield is a priority as the rebuild continues.
Bournemouth’s Stance on Scott
The Blues tried to sign Scott last summer, but Bournemouth refused to sell. His contract runs until 2028, though a bid in the region of £100m could change their position. Bournemouth are said to want him on a new deal with improved wages, yet Scott has reportedly rejected previous offers.
Competition from Rivals
Arsenal and Spurs have reportedly held talks over a deal, while Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola is keen to reunite with Scott. Liverpool did not sign a midfielder last summer despite selling Curtis Jones, so that area could be addressed next year. Arsenal look well covered in midfield following the arrival of Bruno Guimaraes.
Our Take
Scott has impressed in the Premier League and earned an England place, so he is a logical target. However, £100m is a hefty fee for a player of his experience, and Chelsea may find a bidding war with several clubs difficult to win. Arsenal’s strong midfield depth also makes them the least likely of the suitors.
