Report: Town Perform Cup Miracle Over Arsenal
Fleetwood Town reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for the first time in the club’s history after beating Arsenal on penalties following a remarkable night at Highbury Stadium.
Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave Town a first-half lead before Viktor Gyökeres equalised after the break. Jay Lynch made a string of important saves to keep the scores level, and the Cods held their nerve in the shootout to seal their place in the last eight.
The fourth-round tie began with an unusual interruption when a drone above the ground brought play to a halt and both teams were taken off the pitch. Once the action resumed, Town grew into the contest. Mark Helm tested Illan Meslier from distance, while Loupalo-Bi went close after meeting a Lewis McCann cross.
The breakthrough arrived in the 21st minute. Loupalo-Bi chased a ball down the left, used his pace and strength to get past Marli Salmon and finished beyond Meslier to send Highbury into celebration.
Arsenal pressed for a response, but Lynch saved from Gyökeres and Town stood firm to take their 1-0 lead into the interval.
The visitors drew level five minutes after the restart when Ceadach O’Neill drove a cross into the six-yard box and Gyökeres turned it home. Lynch then produced a superb double save, denying Max Dowman before getting back up to keep out Kai Havertz’s follow-up.
Town remained a threat themselves. Loupalo-Bi had a second-half finish ruled out for offside, while the Cods continued to work tirelessly without the ball. Arsenal were reduced to ten men late on when Dowman was sent off following an incident involving Harrison Neal.
There was still time for Lynch to make another vital stop, keeping out Ben White from close range as the tie went to penalties.
Ronan Coughlan, Neal, Will Davies and Andy Cannon all converted for Town. Lynch then saved Arsenal’s fourth spot-kick from Bruno Guimarães, leaving Conor Haughey with the chance to win it. The defender made no mistake, scoring Town’s fifth penalty to complete a famous victory and take Fleetwood into uncharted territory.
