It won’t be long before the transfer window re-opens, and while Liverpool has made a steady start under Andoni Iraola, there could be some business to do in January.

‌

The Reds currently sit fourth in the Premier League after beating Brighton at the weekend, with attention now turning to the Carabao Cup as they face Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday.

It has been a promising start, but there are some obvious areas which could be improved. Not only that, but some familiar faces are being linked with returns to Merseyside - could Iraola and sporting director Julian Ward be tempted into treading old ground?

Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the latest transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Real Madrid)

Trent Alexander-Arnold is in no rush to return to Liverpool despite his lack of game time at Real Madrid, according to Football Insider.

The Reds’ former vice-captain has fallen out of favor under Jose Mourinho at the Bernabeu, having only made one cameo appearance in Real’s last four games, while making just seven appearances in total so far this season.

That has led to speculation that he could be on his way back to Anfield, but this latest report claims that he has no interest in re-joining his boyhood club as it stands, although he is unlikely to ever rule out such a move.

Liverpool.com says: While Mourinho's in charge of Real Madrid, it's hard to imagine Alexander-Arnold will be winning his place back in the side. You would never expect the former Chelsea boss to hang around for long, but even if he just spends a year or two at the Bernabeu, that could really hamper Trent's career. Looking at the current situation, it might not be long before he has to cut his losses and look elsewhere. As much as he left a sour taste upon his exit from Anfield, there can't be much doubt that he would be an improvement back at right-back for the Reds.

Jarell Quansah (Bayer Leverkusen)

AC Milan could be in for Jarell Quansah in January, transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio has told wettfreunde.net. The former Liverpool defender has been linked with a return to Anfield, with the Reds holding a buy-back clause, although other clubs have also been linked with his services.

Arsenal and Real Madrid have been credited with interest after he impressed in his first year at Bayer Leverkusen, and now it’s suggested a move to the San Siro could be on the cards in the New Year.

“I think Jarell Quansah is more of a summer deal,” Di Marzio said. “Real Madrid are okay in that position if all players are fit. I don't think they will move for a player in that position in January.

“But Quansah has interest from a lot of clubs. AC Milan are looking at him. Obviously, if (former Eintracht Frankfurt sporting director) Markus Krosche does come to AC Milan, he knows the player. I definitely think he is on the list of AC Milan, even in January.”

Liverpool.com says: It will be interesting to see what happens with Quansah over the next year or so. If this is to be Virgil van Dijk's final year at Liverpool, then a new center-back is likely to be a priority, and bringing the academy graduate back would be a popular move.
