Sheffield United eyed a move for the right-back ahead of this season after his exit from Everton in the Premier League. However, nothing materialised in the end and he didn’t join SUFC.

Coleman, 38, remains without a club and may now call time on his playing career as he focuses on family life and punditry work. He spent 17 years with the Toffees and made 435 appearances for the Merseyside outfit in all competitions, as well as having a loan spell away at Blackpool in his early career.

Championship Roundup

The ex-Republic of Ireland international, who made 81 caps, has shared this update on The Overlap: “I had hopes and ambitions of maybe possibly staying playing on. The longer I’ve been off and the more I’ve been around the family, we’ve been back home for Halloween break with the kids, the more I’m content with what I’m doing at the minute.”

He added: “I don’t want to completely draw a line in the sand, as I said I’ve been keeping fit. But it’s edging towards that way – and happily as well. Regarding what’s next, I’ve been enjoying family time. I’m doing this [punditry] now and seeing if I enjoy it and see how it goes.”

Sheffield United right-back latest amid Seamus Coleman transfer miss

Sheffield United will have identified Coleman as someone to bolster their defensive department. He if had joined SUFC, he would have given them more competition and depth at the back.

He would have also injected some valuable experience into their squad. Nevertheless, a move wasn’t to be in the end.

The Blades swooped for Matt Doherty instead after his departure from Wolves. They also have Femi Seriki at their disposal so they are well stocked up with options in Coleman’s right-back position.

Coleman rose up through Sligo Rovers’ ranks before breaking into their first-team. Everton then lured him over to England as a youngster in 2009 and he hasn’t looked back since.

The Verdict: Sheffield United are well stocked up in Seamus Coleman’s position

Sheffield United won’t regret missing out on Coleman too much. As well as Doherty and Seriki, Hamza Choudhury can also play as a full-back as well for SUFC if needed.

Coleman would have been a good character to have in and around the dressing room for the Blades and is someone who their younger players would have learnt a lot from. It seems unlikely he will join another team now though and the longer he hasn’t signed for anyone, the more likely his career is coming to an end.

The Blades drew 1-1 at home against Derby County last time out and were left frustrated that they weren’t able to find a winner. Striker Patrick Bamford got their goal against the Rams.

Chris Wilder’s side are sat in 12th place in the Championship table after their first 12 fixtures and they are four points off the play-offs behind the likes of Southampton, Birmingham City and QPR. They are back in action this Friday evening with a home clash against Wrexham as they aim to close the gap on the top eight.
