Liverpool and Chelsea to set unique Carabao Cup record immediately after kick-off

Liverpool and Chelsea will share a unique slice of Carabao Cup history when the two clash at Anfield on Wednesday, live on talkSPORT.

The Premier League rivals are familiar foes in this competition, having met 10 times, including in two of the last four Wembley finals.

In fact, the last two League Cup meetings between Liverpool and Chelsea have been in finals, with the Reds lifting the trophy in both 2021-22 (0-0, won on pens) and 2023-24 (1-0).

Their last encounter during the knockout stages of the competition was in the third round in 2018-19, which the Blues won 2-1 at Anfield.

Xabi Alonso will hope history repeats itself upon his return to his former club, where he has been unsuccessful on his past two visits.

The former Liverpool midfielder was thrashed 4-0 at Anfield in charge of a Bayer Leverkusen team that featured current Reds players, Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong.

Alonso then lost again almost a year to the day last November when Alexis Mac Allister sealed a 1-0 victory over his Real Madrid side.

Regardless of whether it is third time lucky for the Spaniard on Wednesday, his Chelsea outfit will already have been part of history.

Liverpool and Chelsea set Carabao Cup record

This is the first League Cup match between Liverpool and Chelsea at the fourth-round stage, which ticks off the full knockout bracket.

It is now the first fixture ever to be played in every round from the second round to the final.

As Premier League giants, the two teams are not eligible to feature in the first round, which is reserved for EFL clubs.

However, Liverpool and Chelsea have faced off in the League Cup second round (once), third round (twice), quarter-final (twice), semi-final (once) and final (three times) previously.

European demands for one or both of the two clubs mean that a second round entry is extremely rare for the Reds and the Blues.

That solitary meeting at such an early stage was in fact their first encounter in the competition, with Liverpool winning 2-0 in 1977.

It would be another 23 years before the pair were drawn against one another in the EFL Cup again, with the Reds claiming a 2-1 scalp.

Chelsea got their revenge in Cardiff half a decade on, with a Steven Gerrard own-goal helping Jose Mourinho lift his first piece of silverware at Stamford Bridge in the 2005 final.

A pair of quarter-final meetings in 2007 and 2011 followed, before the Londoners triumphed in a two-legged semi-final 11 years ago.

Eden Hazard's memorable solo goal at Anfield completed a comeback third-round victory for Chelsea in his final full Blues season in 2018/19.

But Liverpool have levelled the League Cup head-to-head with four wins apiece, including two of the most recent victories, which crucially also delivered Jurgen Klopp two major trophies.

TalkSPORT will have live commentary of the 11th encounter, presented by Adrian Durham - with commentary from Jim Proudfoot and former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend.
