'Done my neck in' - Fleetwood boss hit by rugby tackle in wild Arsenal celebrations

Matt Lawlor applauds Fleetwood's supporters

Fleetwood Town boss Matt Lawlor will be feeling a little worse for wear on Wednesday morning.

Lawlor was the mastermind behind Fleetwood's all-time upset as they sensationally knocked Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup via penalties.

Lawlor was in the thick of Fleetwood's celebrations

Fleetwood supporters burst onto the pitch within seconds of Conor Haughey's match-winning penalty to toast their momentous victory, with Lawlor firmly in the thick of it.

But one individual took their celebrations to a whole different level.

Fleetwood Town boss 'rugby-tackled'

"Someone rugby-tackled me, I've done my neck," Lawlor revealed on the Sports Bar.

"I didn't know who it was."

But Lawlor, who added he'd felt as if he was 'bounced around a dishwasher' during the post-match carnage, was overjoyed that football didn't feel so 'professionalised' for once.

"That's the stuff we dream of," Lawlor said.

"It's a little bit of football, isn't it? I love the feeling of football.

"Sometimes it's a bit professionalised and distant, but that shows you the non-distance of it and the feeling football can create."

Lawlor added: "For me, it's a feeling that I love.

"Hopefully that feeling can be recreated maybe once a season or every two seasons that David beats Goliath."

What's next for Fleetwood Town?

Lawlor isn't letting his side bask in the glory of their giant-killing for too long, though.

With Fleetwood sitting 18th in League Two, Lawlor desperately wants to keep the winning feeling going on Saturday when they host Bristol Rovers.

Fleetwood will be buoyed by the fact Rovers, who sit 15th on 16 points, have lost seven of their last nine fixtures in all competitions.

Lawlor's side can also leapfrog their rivals in the league on Saturday with a win.

"We've done really well in cups this year, I just want to transfer it to the league," Lawlor said.

"I'm really concentrated on Saturday. I want us to win. We've been really good at home."
