Chelsea take on Liverpool in the EFL Cup tonight, and there are a few really interesting questions for Xabi Alonso to answer with his team sheet.

He’s missing Joao Pedro, Reece James and Emi Martinez injured, plus Cole Palmer suspended. He will also want to rotate a bit. So who does he go with?

In goal it will obviously be Mike Penders, trying to build up some confidence after a bad mistake on his Premier League debut.

The defence will see Wesley Fofana come back in for Josh Acheampong. Maxence Lacroix probably keeps his place centrally, with Jorrel Hato moving more centrally to play left of the three.

In midfield, we could see the full rotation of Valentin Barco and Romeo Lavia. Then out wide Marco Palestra will play on one side, and potentially Geovany Quenda on the other.

The attack likely has Danny Welbeck leading the line (assuming Emmanuel Emegha still isn’t fit for a start) with Estevao finally getting some minutes on one side and Morgan Rogers probably adding some first team strength on the other.

In other news…

Welbeck isn’t the only option that Alonso has for tonight’s game, although none of the solutions are ideal

We’re excited for tonight’s game, and curious whether we will see Emmanuel Emegha for the first time.

Alonso confirmed the JP injury was going to rule him out for a number of weeks – although he was as vague as ever.
