Things could get really bad for any team, but there has to be a stronger word to describe Arsenal’s disrespectful and abject performance in their match against Fleetwood Town last night. No matter how favourably one tries to view it, Arsenal were embarrassing, and the display was so poor that Max Dowman struggled, lost his temper and was sent off.
The game seemed as though the Gunners were playing against a top side such as Manchester City, not because Arsenal faced a particularly strong opponent, but because they simply appeared uninterested in winning. There can never be a justification for such a terrible performance against one of the worst teams in League Two, with Fleetwood currently sitting 18th in the league standings.
A Defeat That Will Hurt
That loss will pain Arsenal more than any defeat the team has suffered in recent times, and it should, because it was such an embarrassing result to endure. Arsenal were expected to show far greater intensity, quality and professionalism, yet they failed to meet even the most basic standards required in a competitive cup tie.
The manner of the performance will concern supporters as much as the result itself. Arsenal did not merely lose; they appeared passive, disjointed and short of the determination expected of a club with their resources and ambitions.

Cup Wait Continues
The Daily Mail covered the game and revealed that the loss and elimination mean Arsenal will continue to wait to win another League Cup, as they have not won the competition in 33 years. That wait will now stretch to 34 years by the time they have another opportunity to win it next season, provided they win it then.
For Arsenal, the immediate challenge is to respond decisively. This defeat cannot simply be dismissed as an isolated bad night, because the lack of application was too evident. The club must ensure that such a performance is not repeated, restore pride quickly, and refocus on the competitions still available to them this season.
