Ronald Araujo has been open about his mental health challenges during the past year, as the Liverpool loanee continues to turn things around after leaving Barcelona in the summer.

‌

‌

The defender had been a regular in the backline at the Camp Nou, even earning the captain's armband in the process as he led the team out time and again. However, mistakes on the pitch led to abuse off it, which sent Araujo into a difficult place when it came to battling with the mental health concerns that then followed it.

‌

It has been well-documented that the Uruguayan international needed some time away to recover, with the mental aspect of soccer often forgotten in a game that is so focused on physicality. In the months since then, the center-back has been very open regarding his own battles and what he was truly facing.

Araujo's wife, Abi, had revealed that there were death threats aimed at the family late last year, which included their daughters, which triggered the bout of depression that he had to battle back from.

"I try to open the umbrella and cover myself, but when they touch the family it's very f----- up," the defender told Mundo Deportivo about the situation earlier this year.

"'I don't understand the evil of the people, they are wishing death to our daughters,' she [Abi] told me. When things get to that dimension, you rethink a lot of things, you see how crazy society is or how crazy people are on social media."

‌

In the time since, the 27-year-old has opened up further on the situation, revealing the help he had asked for over the following months. "I hadn’t felt right for a long time," Araujo recently told The Times. "And I wasn’t enjoying the thing I love most, which is football.

"I realized I had to put my hand up, ask for help and talk not just to the people closest to me, but to professionals as well. Sometimes you bottle things up and try to be the strong man, but in life you have to talk about things and open up about what you’re going through."

What followed was a move to Liverpool in the summer, a loan switch that many may have seen as a stop-gap signing at the time to help cover for a lack of depth in the backline. Instead, the defender has been met with the love and affection of a fanbase that has quickly taken him as one of their own.

‌

With the work rate and desire underscoring almost every action, no matter how neat or tidy it is, there is a player there who has won over the supporters in double quick time.

That has led to talk of a stay, with a $62.5 million clause in his loan that would allow for a move permanently next summer. “It’s far too early to talk about that," Araujo also said.

‌

"I want to thank everyone for the affection they’ve shown me because it’s helped me enormously. But I also want to make one thing clear: whether I stay at Liverpool or not isn’t entirely up to me.”

Given the love and support he has already received, there is some hope that things have finally turned around for the defender. While that may be the case, he may need to ask for Barcelona's help again to facilitate a move at the end of the season if that were to come about.

However, that may be a conversation for another day. For now, the defender is showing that there is a way to speak up and get help when it's tough, and that things can get better.
