Arsenal travel to Anfield on Sunday for a Premier League meeting with Liverpool after a damaging Carabao Cup exit.

League Two side Fleetwood Town knocked the Premier League champions out on penalties on Tuesday night.

Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave Fleetwood the lead in the 21st minute at Highbury Stadium. Viktor Gyokeres equalised in the 50th minute.

Arsenal had 78 per cent of the possession and 26 shots to Fleetwood’s three. Goalkeeper Jay Lynch denied Ben White and Martin Odegaard in stoppage time to force a shoot-out.

Lynch then saved Bruno Guimaraes’ penalty, and Conor Haughey converted the winning kick in a 5-3 shoot-out win. It put Fleetwood into the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.

Teenage forward Max Dowman was shown a red card in the match for violent conduct in the 85th minute after kicking out at Fleetwood midfielder Harrison Neal following a heavy challenge.

The 16-year-old is expected miss three matches.

Arsenal will now travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday. They beat Everton 2-0 on Saturday and sit second in the table on 21 points, level with leaders Manchester City.

Liverpool beat Brighton 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday, their first home league win of the season.

According to Sky Sports News reporter Lyall Thomas, Arsenal are appealing the red card shown to Max Dowman.

The club must submit appeal documents to the Football Association by 1pm on Thursday. Arsenal hope for a decision before the Liverpool game, but the FA sets the timing.

If the ban stands, Dowman will miss the Premier League games at Liverpool, at home to Hull City on 7 November and at Newcastle United on 21 November.

The ban applies only to domestic games, so he remains available for the Champions League matches at Slavia Prague on 4 November and at home to Borussia Dortmund on 24 November. If the appeal fails, Arsenal will have fewer options on the right wing.

Arsenal have won a red-card appeal before. An independent Regulatory Commission upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal for Myles Lewis-Skelly after his red card against Wolves and removed his three-match suspension.

Dowman has already made history. He became the youngest scorer in Premier League history at 16 years and 73 days when he scored in a 2-0 win over Everton last season.

#ArsenalFC are appealing the red card issued to Max Dowman last night. Has to be submitted by 1pm on Thursday. Club are hopeful a decision will be made before their match at #LiverpoolFC on Sunday. More on @SkySportsNews #AFC
