Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will continue to land himself in hot water with Premier League referees if he doesn’t rein in his actions on the touchline.
That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who has “no sympathy” for the Spanish boss at the moment.
This comes after Arteta was booked by referee Tony Harrington for leaving his technical area during last weekend’s win over Everton, the second time that has happened to him so far this season.
Wyness believes that the 44-year-old manager has no excuse to continue getting caught out in that manner, and feels that punishments for him will be “automatic” in future.
Arteta has long since angered fans with his tendency to vacate the technical area, and Premier League officials are now beginning to crack down on it.
Wyness warned that a ban is inevitable for Arteta if he continues to pick up bookings, which will only hinder his team later in the campaign.
Mikel Arteta faces fine for his actions
Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that a ban for Arteta later in the campaign would also likely come with a fine from the Premier League.
Bosses in the top flight receive an automatic one-game suspension after picking up three yellow cards, meaning that Arteta is now just one mis-step away from watching from the stands.
“Well, I don't think it's a case of them focusing on a bigger punishment; it's going to be automatic. If he keeps getting yellow cards, there'll be a ban and a fine,” he said.
“Look, I know Mikel. I signed him as a player, had a great relationship with him and have a lot of respect for him.
“However, in this case, he's getting paid- was it £25million a year? I'm afraid you've got to stay eight inches on the other side of the line. And I don't think it's too hard to do that.
“I've got no sympathy with him for the way he's doing this right now, and he needs to sort it out and get it right. Otherwise, those yellow cards will keep coming, and if you're getting paid that much as a manager, you don't want to be off the bench because of a suspension.
“So I'm afraid, no sympathy, Mikel, on this one. Get it sorted.”
Viktor Gyokeres plotting Arsenal exit
Football Insider revealed last week that Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres will give “serious thought” to a move away at the end of the season if his game time doesn’t improve.
The Sweden international has played just 148 minutes of Premier League football so far this term, but scored his first goal of the season in the Carabao Cup defeat to Fleetwood Town in midweek.
Gyokeres is understood to be “frustrated” with his lack of involvement of late, and will “consider his options” at the end of the season.
Arsenal are reluctant to sell him during the upcoming January window, but would be prepared to let him go next summer when they will have more time to bring in a replacement.
