Liverpool and Chelsea go into the half-time break level at 1-1 at Anfield, with both sides finding the net from the penalty spot in an entertaining Carabao Cup contest.
It is all to play for in the second half, with Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool needing to find another gear if they are to book their place in the next round.
Chelsea Strike First, but Liverpool Respond
Chelsea took the lead through Rogers, who converted from the penalty spot to put the visitors in front and give Liverpool an early problem to solve.
However, Liverpool responded, with Cody Gakpo keeping his composure from 12 yards to bring the Reds back on level terms.
It was an important response from Liverpool, particularly with Iraola making eight changes to his starting line-up following Sunday’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Brighton.
Ngumoha Has His Opportunity
One of the biggest talking points before kick-off was the inclusion of Rio Ngumoha in the starting XI.
The youngster has earned his opportunity after impressing against Villarreal, where he provided two assists. Liverpool supporters will be hoping he can make a similar impact against Chelsea and give Iraola another selection headache ahead of Sunday’s massive meeting with Arsenal.
With Trey Nyoni and James McConnell also involved from the start, this is a valuable opportunity for Liverpool’s younger players to show what they can offer.
My Half-Time Verdict
Liverpool have shown the character to respond after falling behind, but there is still work to do.
The penalty from Gakpo has got the Reds back into the contest, and the second half is now about making that home advantage count.
Iraola will want to see more attacking threat, better control of the game and greater urgency in the final third. With Arsenal visiting Anfield on Sunday, there is also the question of how much he will be prepared to change things from the bench.
A place in the next round is there for the taking, but Liverpool need to make their chances count.
