Liverpool knocked Chelsea out of the Carabao Cup on penalties to book their place in the quarter-finals, as Xabi Alonso and Jordan Henderson suffered defeat on their return to Anfield. The tie went to a shootout after Morgan Rogers’ penalty was cancelled out by Cody Gakpo’s spot-kick in normal time.
Valentin Barco struck the woodwork for Chelsea, while Kostas Tsimikas blazed over for Liverpool before former Reds captain Henderson converted his effort.
Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders then saved Ryan Gravenberch’s penalty, but Giorgi Mamardashvili denied Emmanuel Emegha. After Joe Gomez scored, Wesley Fofana skied his spot-kick over the bar, sending the Kop wild as Liverpool advanced.
Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola told ITV Sport after the game: “It has been a very competitive game. “It is a great experience. Other players have played a good competitive game and I think to be in this knockout competition it gives you experience.
“The played really well. Let’s see who we play in the next one.” On Joe Gomez scoring, Iraola added: “He was also very confident. I knew he would score this.”
Elsewhere, Carabao Cup holders Manchester City needed penalties to overcome Brighton after fighting back to draw 2-2 at the Etihad.
Bournemouth secured a fifth consecutive win across all competitions, beating Aston Villa 3-0 at home to reach the quarter-finals.
