Arsenal Eye£1.7m Serie A Striker As January Plans Take Shape

Arsenal’s start has given Mikel Arteta room to plan beyond immediate fixes, but any new forward must offer genuine value. The Gunners have 21 points from eight Premier League matches in England. Viktor Gyökeres leads the line, while Kai Havertz offers another centre-forward option.

Gyokeres scoring and converting his penalty with aplomb in the shootout in the Carabao Cup defeat and assisting in the previous game shows he is well able to fight for his place. No matter what happens its in his best interests to play well and crucially SCORE.

The Arsenal depth makes a January move a question of timing, not urgency. Arsenal’s recruitment team favour players who can contribute now and retain long-term value, but a young striker needs a credible route to minutes.

Those recruitment priorities help explain the interest in a young forward making an impression in Italy. Gustavo Varela, a 21-year-old Portuguese centre-forward, has scored seven goals and provided one assist in seven Serie A appearances for Monza so far this season, playing 599 minutes.

His average FOTMob rating is 7.56. Monza signed him from Benfica for a reported £1.7 million. La Gazzetta dello Sport reported interest from Arsenal and Napoli, with Calciomercato and Yahoo Sports relaying the story. (gazzetta.it)

Why Varela has caught Arsenal’s eye

Varela’s scoring rate stands out, although seven league games remain a small sample. His penalty-box instincts look promising, but Arsenal must assess his movement, link-up play and response to Premier League pressure before treating him as a ready-made option. Monza have him under contract until 2030, giving the Italian club a strong negotiating position.

That contract is only one potential complication. Reports say Benfica can match a future offer and retain 20 per cent of capital gains from a sale. Arsenal would need to verify those terms before making a formal approach.

Should Arsenal move for Varela in January or wait?

Arsenal should resist a rushed winter bid. Gyökeres and Havertz already give Arteta established options, so any deal must justify its cost. Varela’s reported £1.7 million fee says little about what Monza would demand now, particularly if Napoli push to secure him in January.

Rather than let that competition dictate their timing, Arsenal should keep scouting Varela, assess whether his finishing and movement hold up against varied defences, and clarify Benfica’s clauses before committing serious money. If those checks support the early evidence, Arsenal can return in summer with a clearer case for his development.

You can imagine that it’s likely Chelsea, Man Utd and more credible clubs with a track record of developing young talent like Brighton and Brentford are all monitoring the player.
