Chelsea crashed out of the Carabao Cup in the fourth round after losing on penalties following a 1-1 draw in what was another outing Xabi Alonso will want to forget.
The Blues took the lead when Moises Caicedo won a penalty off Ryan Gravenberch, which Morgan Rogers converted, but the West London outfit did not hold on.
Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana gave away a penalty which Cody Gakpo struck home just before half-time. The second half lacked quality, and they had to settle for penalties.
Unfortunately, Chelsea lacked composure when they needed it, as Valentin Barco, Emanuel Emegha, and Fofana missed their penalties.
The Blues are winless in two games, and doubts will grow about whether Alonso is really the man for the job after an unconvincing start.
However, it is hard to look past the woeful performance that Fofana delivered to sabotage the game.
Not only did the Frenchman give away a penalty, but he also missed his, skying it atrociously.
Signed by Chelsea for almost £70 million in 2022 and given a lengthy £200k-per-week contract, Fofana has been one of the worst signings in the club’s history.
Fofana has struggled to stay fit for long stretches, and when he does string a few performances together, they turn out horrendous.
He is not particularly dominant in the air or especially sturdy on the ground, and his weak mentality shows consistently in his game.
They should have sold him last summer alongside Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevor Chalobah. They cannot miss that chance with the 25-year-old this summer.
Fofana is clearly not Chelsea standard, and unfortunately they are about to find out the hard way in the coming weeks.
He is set to get a consistent run in the first team after Maxence Lacroix’s injury, and fans will be wary of his tendency for diabolical performances.
