Liverpool FC midfielder Trey Nyoni was named Man of the Match as the Reds progressed through the Carabao Cup 4th round against Chelsea, drawing 1-1 before winning 6-5 on penalties.

The young midfielder completed 65 of 76 passes (86% success rate), won 4 duels, made 2 tackles, and intercepted 4 balls, in what is becoming the norm for Nyoni: another assured, grown-up performance in the middle of the park.

After the game, his head coach and teammates praised the midfielder. Head coach Andoni Iraola had this to say:

“I think he has done very well. Really well. It’s good for the young players especially to have these experiences in cup competitions, where if you lose, you’re out.

“We were losing and then drew level. They weren’t involved in the penalty shootout, but they experienced those feelings. They played under pressure against a very good team.

“And Trey finished physically in a good place, so well done to him.”

Fellow wunderkind Rio Ngumoha had kind words to say too:

“Trey is top. You guys haven’t even seen him at his very best yet. He definitely has another level to go and he’s only 19.”

“The sky is the limit for Trey. I’m really happy he’s getting the minutes to show himself, but also everyone else, how good he is.”

With all the speculation about Liverpool’s midfield makeup going forward, one thing is clear: Trey Nyoni is the future of the midfield.
