It is League Cup time. Everton are drawn with Newcastle United in the EFL Cup 4th Round. Two wins away from a first semi-final in 10 years. Damning stats indeed. Newcastle at home, you say? Let’s run it back.

Everton vs Newcastle Carabao Cup Preview and Predicted XI
EVERTON 1-0 NEWCASTLE UTD, 12TH MARCH 1995
It was 1995 when Everton last won a trophy; we all know the songs. Everton defeated the Toon en route to the 1995 triumph.
Dave Watson, with the goal to put Everton into the semi-finals. Ruel Fox will not want to watch this game back, missing a sitter to make it 1-1. Big Nev was at his normal best this game (and the whole tournament, to be fair). Talented Toon side put to the sword, which is always nice.
EVERTON 2-0 NEWCASTLE UTD, 17TH AUGUST 1996
Let’s not forget Newcastle came a whisker from winning the league the season before. Opening day of the season belonged to Everton, and Gary Speed, on his Everton debut, slotted past Pavel Srnicek after a flick-on by Duncan Ferguson.
David Unsworth from the penalty spot sealed the win. Impressive start to the season, which, looking back, should and could have been so much better if it wasn’t for the Joe Royle debacle.
EVERTON 0-1 NEWCASTLE UTD, 4TH JANUARY 1998
Apologies for adding this to the list. If a result was ever ‘Everton’ this was up there. Newcastle were no great shakes here; Everton were fighting relegation, and this 3rd round FA Cup tie would have been a welcome distraction.
Poor game of football all round, of course Everton succumbed to a winner by none other than a probably 40-year-old Ian Rush, who had joined Newcastle that year after many years of destroying Everton for Merseyside rivals. As a 12-year-old watching this, it stung.
EVERTON 2-0 NEWCASTLE UTD, 7TH MAY 2005
The 2004/05 season was the best season to be an Evertonian. This game was the pinnacle of that year, knowing a win basically got us fourth.
David Weir set us on our way just after half-time, but no one remembers that. Everyone remembers Tim Cahill beating the Newcastle offside trap to smash the ball into the roof of the net. The celebrations that followed were wild. 'CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WE’RE HAVING A LAUGH'.
EVERTON 3-0 NEWCASTLE UTD, 7TH DECEMBER 2023
Everton and Newcastle fans' rivalry had reached fever pitch by the time this game kicked off. Jordan Pickford and Anthony Gordon at the centre of most.
Everton had the last laugh in this game. Kieran Trippier with two glaring errors to let Dwight McNeil then Abdoulaye Doucoure score to make it 2-0.
The story here was, Everton scored a third while the crowd ole’d every pass, and Newcastle were literally chasing shadows. This was finished off by Beto for his first league goal for the Blues. Some night that at Goodison Park, to be fair.
