Iraola praises Liverpool teenager after man-of-the-match Chelsea performance

Andoni Iraola praised the performance of Trey Nyoni after the Liverpool midfielder was named man of the match during the club’s Carabao Cup win over Chelsea.

Liverpool reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after beating Chelsea 6-5 on penalties at Anfield, following a 1-1 draw in normal time. Iraola opted to rotate his team for the clash, ahead of a Premier League meeting with Arsenal this weekend, and handed Nyoni a start in central midfield.

The 19-year-old has been on the fringes of the first team this season and impressed, earning the Player of the Match award from Liverpool’s official social media channels.

Iraola said Nyoni did ‘very well’ and was pleased how his youngsters handled the occasion, with academy graduate Lewis Koumas also starting against Chelsea.

“I think he has done very well. Really well. It’s good for the young players especially to live these experiences in cup competitions, where if you lose you are out,” Iraola said in his post-match press conference.

“We have been losing and then the draw. Then they haven’t been there in the penalty shootout but they lived the feelings. They played under pressure against a very good team. And Trey has finished physically in a good place, so well done, yes.”
