Liverpool’s search for midfield reinforcements could take a new turn after reports linked Chelsea with Bournemouth‘s Alex Scott, leaving Andoni Iraola to consider alternatives ahead of January.
The Reds have started the 2026-27 campaign strongly, but injuries and suspensions have exposed the limits of their central options. Ryan Gravenberch’s suspension and Dominik Szoboszlai’s hamstring problem have increased the workload on Alexis Mac Allister, while Trey Nyoni remains a young option rather than a proven senior replacement. With Liverpool seeking greater depth, competition from Chelsea could complicate their plans.
According to Steve Pearson’s report for TEAMtalk, published by LiveScore, Chelsea have verbally agreed personal terms with Scott. The report says the London club are working on an agreement with Bournemouth, with a possible fee of £90 million to £100 million.
Scott has contributed one goal and one assist in six appearances for Bournemouth so far this season. His debut for England announced his arrival on the international stage as he looked right at home.
🤔 If you’re the Sporting Director at a Premier League club, who are you signing? Alex Scott or Adam Wharton? https://t.co/zlFRIuyP4F

Palace’s Adam Wharton is without a doubt a top talent but Adam Scott is just a little ahead of his countryman. His ability to carry the ball through midfield and pass through tight spaces would suit both Chelsea’s possession game and Liverpool’s aggressive pressing approach.
Yet a fee approaching £100 million would represent a major commitment for a player who may initially share minutes with established starters.
Could Lamine Camara be Liverpool’s smarter option?
Liverpool’s reported alternative is Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, with Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg cited as the source of the report. The 22-year-old could cost considerably less than Scott, although the exact January asking price remains unconfirmed. Chelsea reportedly explored a £47 million deal for Camara in the summer, but negotiations with Monaco collapsed before the deadline.
For Iraola, Camara may offer a more defensive profile, with ball-winning and quick transitions helping Liverpool recover possession and launch attacks. Scott, by contrast, brings greater emphasis on carrying and progression. That difference gives Liverpool a clear choice between improving their defensive coverage and adding another midfielder who can break lines with the ball.
Should Liverpool switch targets?
A move for Camara would not automatically represent a downgrade. Liverpool must judge the player against the role they need, not simply compare headline prices. If the coaching staff want stronger defensive coverage and a lower fee, Camara deserves serious consideration. If they prioritise a Premier League midfielder who can carry the ball and break lines, Scott’s appeal is clear.
The reported £90 million to £100 million price for Scott demands careful scrutiny, especially with other squad needs to address. Liverpool should establish Camara’s availability, valuation and willingness to move before committing. Given the difference in reported costs and playing styles, Camara could represent the more sensible option if Iraola wants greater midfield protection without committing a huge sum to one signing.
It’s Man Utd who could really do with the class of Alex Scott but why would he want to join the circus at Old Trafford?
