That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that the referee's actions were disappointing at Anfield on Wednesday, 28 October.

That could quite easily have changed though after Emanuel Emegha's introduction for the final 25 minutes of proceedings.

In the 71st minute, Chelsea's substitute went charging into Virgil van Dijk, completely forgetting about the ball and barging into Liverpool's captain.

Emanuel Emegha deserved sanction for Virgil van Dijk incident

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hackett explained that Emegha's actions were reckless, as fans in attendance were left totally baffled.

"The referee took no action for what was a very aggressive run and push that met the criteria for being reckless.

"Van Dijk ended up on the floor, so this player is very fortunate not to receive a yellow card. Come on referee, you had a reasonable game, but you could have done better here.

"This could have easily caused a mass confrontation. I am surprised and disappointed that a yellow card was not issued to the Chelsea player."

The centre-forward was fortunate that he ran out Van Dijk, rather than someone else who might have overreacted and lashed back at him.

Supporters are all very baffled by the footage going viral on social media, and only Emegha will be able to explain what was going through his head.
