Should his head be turned, the Blues will risk losing a remarkable, home-grown talent for pennies to a rival next summer.

The England youth international was faced up against the hugely talented Rio Ngumoha and managed to keep him quiet for much of the game.

He has become a key player under Alonso, which will only have improved Chelsea's chances of coming to an agreement to extend his stay.

Josh Acheampong impresses in stats vs Liverpool

Though no active discussions are reportedly ongoing about a new deal for Acheampong, talks are expected to take place soon.

The 20-year-old's representatives have been hesitant to enter negotiations until they are convinced that Chelsea is the best place for his development.

With Alonso now having started the defender in the last four consecutive games without substituting him, it appears effort is going into making that point.

Yet Acheampong has been full value for his role, too. He was superb on Wednesday, excelling both on the ball and off it.

The right-back completed a successful dribble and took three touches in the opposition box, playing a more reserved role.

His best moments came at the other end, with Acheampong making three tackles - the joint-most of anybody - a block, six clearances, an interception and two recoveries.

What has Xabi Alonso said about Acheampong?

Chelsea will be well aware of the mounting interest in Acheampong, who would be a major acquisition for any Premier League side.

"Josh has played a few games and is ready to play," Alonso said earlier this month. "I saw he did well with the Under-21s; I know he didn’t play the last game but he has done well.

"He has taken a step forward. He is playing more maturely and more aggressively, and is knowing what it takes to compete in the Premier League.

"He is on that journey as he has great potential and great qualities. He has played and he will play again."
