Hugo Ekitike was like every Liverpool fan as he watched the Reds triumph in their penalty shootout against Chelsea on Wednesday.

The Carabao Cup tie at Anfield went the distance after Morgan Rogers and Cody Gakpo both scored from the spot during normal time, with Liverpool eventually securing a 6-5 win in the shootout to secure a quarter-final tie with Bournemouth in December.

Giorgi Mamardashvili proved to be the hero, with the goalkeeper keeping his side in the contest as he saved from Emmanuel Emegha after Ryan Gravenberch’s miss. Joe Gomez would go on to bury his effort before Wesley Fofana sent his penalty into the Kop.

As he continues his recovery from his Achilles injury, Ekitike watched Wednesday’s game from home, and he went through all the emotions as the Reds endured the drama of the penalty shootout.

The striker’s agent posted a video of himself and Ekitike watching the game on a laptop, with the pair reacting just as Mamardashvili saved Emegha’s spot-kick.

Ekitike is seen shouting and celebrating, with his agent captioning the video with: “Mon dieu. Let’s go Reds,” along with a red love heart.

The striker shared the video to his own story, along with a picture of the full-time scenes alongside the caption: “Vamossss”.

The victory over Chelsea of course means that Liverpool remains in the hunt for four trophies this season, and gives Ekitike more to target as he works his way back from injury.

The 24-year-old remains on course to return before the end of 2026, with reports in France having claimed he is looking to be back in training in November before making his comeback around the Christmas period.

Ekitike has been included in Liverpool’s Champions League squad for the league phase, which runs until the end of January, indicating that Andoni Iraola has some confidence that he will be able to play a role in the opening stage of the competition.

Giving an update on Ekitike and fellow long-term absentee Conor Bradley earlier this month, the Liverpool head coach said: "They are both doing very well. I think they are in a good place.

"Conor is not so far from training with the group – not like full training, but doing some things with the group.

"Hugo is a little bit behind that, but that was always the plan. He is still doing very well according to the plan."
