Ally McCoist gives Everton an excuse after Alan Brazil question live on talkSPORT

Ally McCoist speaking on talkSPORT about Everton's lack of silverware

David Moyes' side welcome Matthias Jaissle's Newcastle to Hill Dickinson Stadium for a fifth-round Carabao Cup tie.

The winner will progress to the quarter-final, where they will meet with Arsenal-killers Fleetwood Town.

Everton have never lifted the Carabao Cup (League Cup), finishing runners-up twice in 1977 and 1984.

But should Moyes' men get past the Magpies, they will be tantalisingly close to lifting the trophy, as well as opening up a passage to European football.

Nobody would deny the fact that Everton are a big club, but the one thing that has evaded them in recent times is silverware.

What did Ally McCoist say about Everton's lack of trophy wins?

It's been over 30 years since Everton last lifted a major trophy.

That was when the Toffees defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the 1995 FA Cup final, with Paul Rideout scoring a famous header in the 30th minute.

The closest Everton have gone to winning another major trophy since then was again in the FA Cup, this time finishing runners-up in 2009.

Ahead of Thursday night's aforementioned Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle, the topic of the Toffees' lack of trophies cropped up on talkSPORT.

Alan Brazil posed the question to Ally McCoist: "Ally, do we give Everton a pass when the likes of City, Chelsea, Liverpool and the rest of the money-boys have swept up all the silverware?"

McCoist answered: "I do, yeah. I mean, I think I might have been at the last cup final that they won (1995 FA Cup).

"Big Paul (Rideout) with a header against Manchester United."

So, how strong should Everton view their chances to end this silverware drought and lift the Carabao Cup this season?

Everton may not get better Carabao Cup chance for many years

It's been a crazy midweek of results in the fifth round of this season's Carabao Cup .

Of course, the story of the round, and the competition so far, was Fleetwood's penalty shootout victory over Arsenal on Tuesday night.

Not only are the Premier League champions out, Brighton, Aston Villa, Fulham, Brentford and Chelsea have all fallen at the fifth-round hurdle.

Liverpool and Manchester City remain in the competition, but the former have been drawn to Bournemouth, so another big contender will go in the quarter-finals.

If Everton can beat Newcastle and progress past Fleetwood, that would leave any of Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Liverpool, Bournemouth, Man City or Bradford in the semi-finals.

This isn't a particularly strong group of teams at this stage of the competition, and if Everton take it seriously, they could have a favourable path to the final.
