Trent Alexander-Arnold has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter at Real Madrid, with The Athletic reporting that he has fallen to third choice at right-back following concerns over his defensive ability.
The former Liverpool defender has started three La Liga matches and one Champions League game this season.
His limited involvement has prompted speculation about a possible return to Anfield, although sources close to the player have dismissed suggestions that he is unhappy or seeking an exit.
According to The Athletic, Alexander-Arnold remains determined to secure a regular place, with his contract running until 2031.
However, Madrid’s right-back situation has raised questions about the club’s next move in the position.
The Spanish giants have invested heavily in the role without finding an undisputed first choice.
Alexander-Arnold joined from Liverpool in 2025, while Dani Carvajal was due to leave at the end of the season. Madrid subsequently signed Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan on a deal running until June 2030.
Despite those changes, the position remains unsettled. Jose Mourinho selected Federico Valverde at right-back for Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou.
According to Cadena SER, Mourinho is open to bringing Tottenham Hotspur defender Pedro Porro to the Bernabeu. The Spain international is also attracting interest from Barcelona, raising the possibility of a transfer battle between the two rivals.
Cadena SER journalist Nil Sola reported that both clubs have already made enquiries about the 27-year-old. Porro is said to be keen on returning to Spain, with Barcelona also reportedly contacting his representatives.
Tottenham, however, are in a strong negotiating position after Porro signed a new contract in June 2026. Sola acknowledged that securing his departure from the Premier League club would be difficult.
For Liverpool, developments in Madrid could be worth monitoring as they also deal with uncertainty at right-back.
Conor Bradley is recovering from knee surgery, while Jeremie Frimpong suffered a muscle injury during the win over Brentford. Ronald Araujo has also provided cover since arriving from Barcelona in the summer.
A potential move for Alexander-Arnold would be complicated by the circumstances surrounding his departure from Anfield. Nevertheless, a return for the academy graduate cannot be ruled out if Liverpool decide to pursue a deal.
