Arsenal teenager learns fate after controversial Fleetwood dismissal

Arsenal have failed in their attempt to overturn Max Dowman’s red card against Fleetwood Town, with the teenager now set to serve a three-match domestic suspension.

The Football Association confirmed on Thursday that an independent Regulatory Commission had rejected Arsenal’s claims of wrongful dismissal and excessive punishment.

Dowman was sent off during Tuesday’s Carabao Cup fourth-round defeat to Fleetwood after reacting to a challenge from midfielder Harrison Neal.

The 16-year-old appeared to kick out at his opponent following the tackle, prompting referee Michael Salisbury to issue a straight red card.

Arsenal subsequently challenged the decision, arguing that the dismissal was unjustified and the resulting punishment disproportionate.

However, the disciplinary panel dismissed both arguments, meaning the original sanction will stand.

“An independent Regulatory Commission has dismissed claims of both wrongful dismissal and excessive punishment for Max Dowman,” an FA spokesperson confirmed.

“The Arsenal player was sent off during their EFL Cup game against Fleetwood Town on Tuesday 27 October and will be suspended for three matches.”

The FA added that the commission’s written reasons would be published in due course.

The decision means Dowman will miss Arsenal’s upcoming Premier League fixtures against Liverpool, Hull City and Newcastle United.

He will therefore be unavailable for Sunday’s trip to Anfield, where Arsenal are hoping to respond to their unexpected cup elimination.

The teenager could return to domestic action against Manchester City on November 29, provided there are no further disciplinary complications.

His suspension does not extend to European competition, leaving him eligible for Arsenal’s Champions League fixtures during that period.

Dowman’s dismissal attracted considerable attention after Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta appeared visibly frustrated as the youngster left the pitch.

Arteta subsequently explained that his reaction concerned instructions discussed with Dowman before the match.

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson criticised the manager’s response, suggesting he would not have reacted similarly towards an experienced player such as Viktor Gyokeres.

Merson also questioned the sending-off itself, arguing that Dowman’s reaction did not warrant a red card.

However, the FA’s decision has now settled the immediate disciplinary matter against the teenager.

The setback comes at a difficult time for Arsenal, who are already managing several attacking injuries.

Bukayo Saka remains sidelined, while Christos Tzolis is working towards a possible return against Liverpool.

Noni Madueke is also expected to recover from an ankle problem in time for Sunday’s encounter.

Dowman’s absence reduces Arteta’s options as Arsenal seek to maintain their Premier League title challenge following the disappointment at Fleetwood.
