Everton set-up a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Fleetwood Town with a 3-1 victory over Newcastle United on Thursday night. The Blues opened the scoring through James Garner before Hayden Hackney added a second on the stroke of half-time.Thierno Barry then added a midway through the second-half, after his side had started to come under pressure from the visitors. And although Dan Burn would find a way past Jordan Pickford in the closing stages, the goal was no more than a consolation. As ever, the ECHO was in attendance at Hill Dickinson Stadium, and below is how our man Connor O’Neill rated Everton players.
Jordan Pickford - 7
Produced a really good save to deny Harvey Barnes from close-range in the first-half, and was alert when called into action again just after his side made it 3-0. The sort of performance Blues supporters want to see from their goalkeeper.
Merlin Rohl - 6
Almost cost his side a goal in the first-half when play from his side was pounced on. He has plenty of energy to get up and down the flank, but too often he is caught out of position and his final delivery could be better.
James Tarkowski - 8
A brilliant performance from the Everton captain. Produced a great block to stop William Osula from scoring the opening goal of the game before proving equal to everything Newcastle had to throw at him in the second-half.
Jake O’Brien - 7
Clearly growing in confidence. Looked much more composed than he did on Saturday and produced a great block just minutes after his side went 3-0 up. Could have done better to prevent Dan Burn's late consolation.
Vitalii Mykolenko - 8
One of his best performances so far this season. Created two openings and produced an outstanding block to deny an almost certain goal while the game was goalless.
James Garner - 7
Produced the moment of magic to fire Everton ahead. Had started slow, but the goal seemed to boost his confidence, and in the second half, he was everywhere and played a key role in his side's third goal.
Hayden Hackney - 8
Guilty of giving away a number of silly fouls, but offered energy and pace in the middle. Created the first goal and scored the second. Delivered the perfect message to his manager.
Tyler Dibling - 6
Showed some flashes of quality, but struggled to get into the game at times.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall - 7
Played a key role in his side's second goal and improved as the game progressed. Still not hitting the same levels he reached last season, but he is certainly getting there.
Tyrique George - 7
Linked up well with Mykolenko and looked a threat down the left. In the absence of Jack Grealish, he has certainly shown signs of stepping up in the last two games.
Thierno Barry - 8
Battled hard at times when forced to feed off scraps, but he produced a fine piece of play for his side's second goal. He then also showed the composure he has been lacking in the last couple of weeks for his goal.
