Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is making good progress in his recovery from a broken jaw and hopes to return to action earlier than initially expected, The Athletic reports.
The Argentina international suffered the injury during Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium a fortnight ago.
The Chelsea shot-stopper collided with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during the match, leaving him with a serious jaw injury that required surgery.
The 34-year-old initially suggested he would be out for a few weeks, but there is now growing optimism that he could return ahead of schedule.
Those familiar with his rehabilitation have confirmed that his recovery is progressing well, although the club hasn’t provided an official update on his expected return date.
Martinez’s potential early comeback would be a welcome boost for Chelsea, who have had to rely on young goalkeeper Mike Penders during his absence.
The Belgian shot-stopper replaced Martinez for the remainder of the Everton match before making his first Premier League start against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.
However, it was a horror full debut for the 21-year-old keeper, who was responsible for Tottenham’s opening goal in Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.
Penders responded positively when Chelsea faced Liverpool in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
He had an encouraging performance against the Reds, although he couldn’t prevent his team from being eliminated after a penalty shootout.
Penders have shown promise, but having an experienced goalkeeper like Martinez back in the fold would be a welcome boost for Chelsea.
Martinez joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in August in a deal worth £7.5 million.
Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, the Argentine keeper has kept one clean sheet in six appearances across all competitions. Interestingly, that came against Everton.
Chelsea will welcome Manchester United to west London on Saturday as they look to return to winning ways following their defeat to Tottenham.
Xabi Alonso’s side are fifth in the Premier League table and will hope to get their campaign back on track with a much-needed win on home turf.
