The Premier League will face problems trying to control fan chanting following an incident in Everton's clash with Chelsea.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that trying to put in provisions to stop offensive chants is "wholly unrealistic".

This comes after Liverpool MP Ian Byrne wrote to Richard Masters, demanding action after those on Merseyside were mocked about their class.

Many have called upon the Premier League to take action via punishments for the West London club, but it remains to be seen how that would work.

There is absolutely no doubt that the chants are shameful and disgraceful, but there is also uncertainty over how this kind of thing can be policed.

Premier League face impossible task over chant bans

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson agreed that these chants should not exist, but argued that those wanting it to disappear could be disappointed.

"I don't think it would be sensible because I think what you're going to end up with is an attempt to control fan chanting, which is basically impossible for clubs anyway.

"The reality is there's almost nothing they can do. You can't ban people for realistically being part of a song. It's not what I think football chants should be.

"It's not that difficult to get away from kind of societal or offensive chanting or racist or anything that's within that realm.

"It's not that difficult, but I just think the idea that you can put in place provisions for stopping it. I think that's just wholly unrealistic, and it's an overreach."

Everton fans continue to fume off the pitch

This is not the only controversial topic at the Hill Dickinson Stadium this season, of course, with the owners looking for an out already.

Given that the Friedkins have not been to visit Everton yet, it seems extremely unlikely that they will be present, but stranger things have happened.
